I finished 100 Tricks Every Boy Can Do, by Kim Stafford, a memoir-in-fragments about his brother Bret’s suicide. It was moving and interesting and one I’m going to keep on hand to study. It’s been suggested to me that my book could work well as a fragmented story and I’m always open to ideas.
Next up for writing-related reading is Daemon Voices: On Stories and Storytelling by Philip Pullman. I picked it up at Harvard Book Store recently and it looks really good.
Speaking of fantasy writers, I took a workshop with N.K. Jemisin last night via the wonderful Blue Stoop, on revision. It was really a workshop on how drafting and revision strategies can help you write a book in a year and it was very inspiring. It wasn’t what I expected from a class called “a masterclass on revision” but I think it was what I needed even if I didn’t know it. I haven’t read her books though I know she is a big deal and she was- wow. So cool. Like I want to be her when I grow up. Considering she is my age that is funny.
While I was up in Massachusetts for my reading I visited the new romance bookstore in Harvard Square, Lovestruck Books, and I can’t recommend it highly enough if you are in the area. Obviously their romance selection is on point- diverse, well-organized and probably comprehensive- but they also have a good selection on non-romance, general interest and literary fiction, nonfiction and children’s books. They also have great merch and doodads and even a cute cafe! Check it out if you get a chance.

Thanks for the bookstore recommendation. I stumbled on a similar one in St. Petersburg also offers coffee and cocktails. It was choc-a-bloc with women readers.
